E Bikes on Lummi Island

August is here, and with it, a swell of summer energy on the island. As a father and small business owner running Seas the Day, I get a front-row seat to what visitors are looking for when they explore Lummi. Kayaks are easily our most popular rental—and I get it. They’re hard to pack, especially if you’re traveling with kids or a group. That’s where we step in.
But coming in at a close second? Ebikes.
I’ll admit, I’ve thought about adding them to the fleet. They’re zippy, fun, and for many visitors, a novel way to see the island. But as with anything, there are pros and some real considerations to weigh—especially as someone who lives and works here full-time.
PROS
• Accessibility: Ebikes open the island up for more people—older guests, less experienced riders, or folks who just want to take in the sights without breaking a sweat.
• Fun factor: They’re undeniably fun. That breeze-in-your-face, freedom-filled feeling? Hard to beat.
• Eco-friendly: Compared to cars, they’re a greener option for exploring the island’s beauty.

• Safety risks: Our roads are scenic but narrow, with lots of blind corners and no shoulders. Ebikes move quicker than traditional bikes, and I’ve seen a few close calls when cars try to pass them around those bends.
• Maintenance & cost: The upfront investment isn’t the issue—it’s the upkeep. Ebikes wear down faster and repairs aren’t cheap.
• Insurance: This one’s big. My current liability costs for kayaks and bikes are already steep. Adding motorized rentals would hike that up significantly.
So for now, I’m holding off. It’s not a “no,” but a “not yet.” I wanted to share this with the community and with our guests—because while I love innovation, I love safety, sustainability, and being a good neighbor even more.
Thanks for riding with us this season. Whether you’re paddling out or pedaling around, I’m always here to help you Love to know your thoughts send me an email. seasthedaylummiisland@gmail.com
